Essential Tips for Dance Adjudicators + Top Songs of Early 2025 | Rapha Conrad

Top 10 Jams of January & February 2025:

By Rapha Conrad

Yes, my friends, it’s that time of year again...DANCE COMPETITION SEASON. Though it might be exciting for the dancers and dance parents, whether they attend one or more competitions and/or conventions, it is very huge for the faculty/judges/staff (who make everything in the dance competition/convention world possible). I am familiar with this world from attending conventions as a student to choreographing routines for dance competition teams. When I achieved one of my goals as a dance adjudicator four years ago, I had to prioritize my health and stamina to be at my very best in each city I travel to each season. If you’re a dance adjudicator, whether it’s your first season or seven season, here are some tips on how to prepare and thrive in a healthy way whenever you’re on the road. These will also be beneficial for dancers, dance parents, and those who travel for work.

1. Nutrition
1a. Meal Prep – At Competitions, they provide meals for the judges and staff but do a little meal prep just in case (timing, allergies, etc.).

1b. Have a snack(s) - Yes, snacks will be provided for the judges and staff but have some snacks that are low in sugar and have a good amount of protein. I would bring some Chomps Meat Sticks, booboo bars, and applesauce squeezes on hand (not a sponsor)

1c. Stay hydrated - Always have water with you. Judging can be intense, so staying hydrated helps with focus and endurance. Yes. We do need caffeine (coffee, energy drinks, etc.), but green tea would be my recommendation. Oh! If you want to add some flavor to your water, True Lemon/True Lime water sticks are my go-to favorites

2. Wardrobe/Style
2a. Comfortable shoes - You’ll be on your feet a lot. Wear supportive, stylish shoes that allow for movement without discomfort.

2b. Layer Up - Dance venues can vary in temperature, so bring layers you can add or remove to stay comfortable (Note: Make sure it matches, or it is suitable for what your contract requires)

2c. Pack Extras - Always pack a backup outfit in case of any wardrobe malfunctions, and don’t forget small essentials like fashion tape, lint rollers, and a mini sewing kit. Oh yes. Don’t forget to bring some accessories (jewelry, pins, etc.) that complete your look.

3. Fitness/Movement
3a. Clothing - Bring some light clothes if you want to workout in the hotel gym. Neatly fold or roll your clothes to save space and keep toiletries in travel-sized containers (Biaggi has packing cubes to store your clothes and shoes).

3b. Portable fitness tools – If the hotel you are staying doesn’t have a gym, bring a yoga mat, resistance bands/yoga strap, or small weight for quick workouts in your hotel room. (You can use the towels and water bottles as alternatives). If that happens, I put on a follow along workout on Youtube (Like Lily Sabri or GrowingAnnanas) or Ballexbody (by Hanna Brictson).

3c. Stretch! - Long flights, car rides, and sitting during competition can make your body stiff. Make it a habit to stretch as much as possible. Also, especially during judges breaks and/or during layovers, taking a walk will help a lot.

4. Sleep/Rest
4a. Routine - Traveling between competitions can throw off your sleep routine. Try to stick to a consistent bedtime and wake-up time, even while on the road.

4b. Power naps - If time allows, short naps (20-30 minutes) between sessions can help refresh your mind.

4c. Screens off - Avoid screen time before sleeping, and consider calming practices like meditation or reading to wind down.

5. Have Fun/Live Your Best Life
5a. Enjoy and be inspired by the performances - Being a judge is a rewarding experience, so take a moment to appreciate the talent you get to witness.

5b. Get to your team - Build relationships with fellow judges and staff members. Social
connections can make the long days more enjoyable.

5c. Explore - If time permits, take a break to explore the city you’re in, even if just for a walk or a quick sightseeing tour. This adds an element of fun to your work trips. Oh yes. Don’t forget to take pictures!

Being a dance competition judge or a dance adjudicator is a unique and fulfilling job, but taking care of your health will make the experience even more rewarding. By focusing on nutrition, comfort, rest, and enjoying the moment/creating memories can keep you energized and make the most of your role as a dance judge.

Oh! I almost forgot. Whenever you are traveling, working out, taking a break, or choreographing (especially if you’re teaching at a dance convention), you got to have some music! Here are my top 10 songs for January and February 2025!
