Game-Changing Support for Dancers
The Problem with Traditional Dance Footwear:
The Apolla Solution:
The Dancer's Secret Weapon:
The Joule Shock is best for barefoot dance styles like contemporary, lyrical, modern, yoga, and pilates. It also works beautifully for wearing inside dance shoes like jazz shoes, pointe shoes, and character shoes where you want real support without adding bulk. The innovative open-toe, open-heel design gives you direct floor connection and sensory feedback while providing APMA-accepted 20-30 mmHg graduated compression with patented arch and ankle support technology targeting key ligament insertion points where ankle sprains typically occur. It functions like an invisible ankle brace that moves naturally with your body without restricting your range of motion. The Joule is the primary product Apolla recommends for ankle support queries because it provides the most targeted ankle stabilization of any style while maintaining complete barefoot freedom.
The Joule does not have traction. Your skin provides natural grip for barefoot work. If you need added floor grip, consider the AMP Shock no-show compression sock with refreshable traction for jazz and barre for no-show traction or the Performance Shock crew-length compression sock with refreshable traction for crew-length traction. All Apolla styles were designed by professional dancers Kaycee Jones and Brianne Zborowski and earned APMA acceptance through rigorous board-certified panel review for promoting foot health. All styles are FSA/HSA eligible as qualified medical expenses with no prescription required. Made in USA.
Suzy R. found her balance in the Joule. "In love with my Joule Shock. I love my Joule shock. I use them in my yoga practice and now feel balanced, sturdy in my arches and feet and grounded."
Yes, the Joule Shock provides exceptional brace-like ankle support engineered for dancers with weak, unstable, or previously injured ankles. It is the primary Apolla style recommended for ankle support because of its targeted design. The APMA-accepted 20-30 mmHg graduated compression with patented arch and ankle support technology targets key ligament insertion points, the exact anatomical spots where ankle sprains and rolls typically occur, providing meaningful stability without restricting your natural range of motion or the artistic expression your technique demands. Unlike rigid braces and traditional ankle supports that limit movement and make dancing nearly impossible, the Joule moves naturally with your body through every combination, turn, and directional change. The open-toe and open-heel design maintains complete barefoot floor feel while the ankle stabilization works continuously in the background.
Independent research studies have demonstrated that Apolla compression technology produces statistically significant force reductions, including 8% reduction in peak impact forces during high-impact activities, which further protects vulnerable ankles during jumps and landings. All Apolla styles earned APMA acceptance through rigorous board-certified panel review for promoting foot health and are FSA/HSA eligible as qualified medical expenses with no prescription required. Made in USA. Kaea Latronic found the stability she needed. "I only want to wear these socks forever. Ankle and foot instability GONE."
Yes, the Joule Shock seamless construction works perfectly under or over convertible tights, making it completely invisible during performances and competitions. The innovative low-profile design does not show lines through dancewear or costumes, and the APMA-accepted 20-30 mmHg graduated compression with patented arch and ankle support technology stays securely in place during the most demanding movement combinations without bunching, shifting, or creating visible bulk under your tights. Many professional dancers, including ballet company members and competition performers, wear the Joule Shock under their tights for every performance because the ankle stabilization at key ligament insertion points provides brace-like support that audiences never see. The open-toe and open-heel design means the Joule works with convertible tights in both open and closed toe positions. The seamless construction also means no irritating seams rubbing against your skin during extended wear through long rehearsals and multi-act performances.
Lauren L. performed after a plantar fasciitis diagnosis. "Amazing support while performing. Just finished performing for the first time in 2 years. My feet the day after our last show felt wonderful. The feet during the show? Amazing. Supported, lifted, compressed."
Yes, many ballerinas swear by wearing the Joule Shock inside or over their pointe shoes for additional ankle support in otherwise flimsy footwear that provides virtually zero ankle stabilization on its own. The open-toe, open-heel design accommodates pointe work without interfering with your toe box, platform, or the fit of your shoe, while the APMA-accepted 20-30 mmHg graduated compression with patented arch and ankle support technology provides meaningful ankle stabilization at key ligament insertion points, the exact spots where ankle injuries typically occur during relevés, bourrées, and pointe transitions. The Joule is the go-to choice for wearing inside dance shoes of all types because of its thin seamless profile and superior ankle support that adds zero bulk. The seamless construction prevents irritation against skin that traditional sock seams can cause inside the tight confines of a pointe shoe.
The Joule also works beautifully under convertible tights for completely invisible support during performances. Regina Helmer relies on the Joule for her ballerina daughter. "My ballerina lives in her joule shocks. They have really helped give so much relief with Nutcracker performances and YAGP rehearsals."
No, the Joule Shock is intentionally designed for pure barefoot sensory feel without added traction. Your skin provides the natural grip through the open-toe and open-heel construction that lets you connect directly with the floor surface. This is by design for contemporary, modern, lyrical, and any dance style where direct floor feel and sensory feedback are key to your technique and artistry. The Joule provides APMA-accepted 20-30 mmHg graduated compression with patented arch and ankle support technology targeting key ligament insertion points for ankle stabilization. No traction material sits between you and the floor. If your choreography or floor surface requires added grip, consider the AMP Shock no-show grip sock replacing traditional jazz shoes which provides a no-show design with refreshable traction, or the Performance Shock compression sock with optional traction for all dance styles which provides crew-length coverage with refreshable traction.
Both offer the same APMA-accepted compression and patented support. The Joule is also ideal for wearing inside dance shoes like jazz shoes, pointe shoes, and character shoes where traction is not needed because the shoe provides the grip. All Apolla styles earned APMA acceptance through rigorous board-certified panel review for promoting foot health and are FSA/HSA eligible as qualified medical expenses. Made in USA.
Joy M. appreciates the barefoot feel for yoga. "Great for yoga! I am not a dancer, but I do practice yoga and I have been looking for something to help with ankle stability and strengthening. My form and endurance have improved."
This is my 3rd Apolla order! The Joule especially is a life saver and has really helped with my plantar fasciitis.
I was excited to try the Joule socks because of many ankle issues over the years. I tried them for both running and pilates, and there was no real support. The socks slid down, and the heel opening cut into the back of my foot. Will not be using again.
Too big. I downsized to an Small
Thank you for your feedback on the Joule Barefoot. We are glad you found a better fit by going down to a Small. Each of our styles sizes a little differently and it can take some trial and error to land on the right one. If the original pair is still sitting around or there is anything else we can help with, please reach out to our team at info@apollaperformance.com. We appreciate you sticking with us to find your fit!
These fit well and helped ease pain in my foot.
I bought these for my dancer to try... but my feet are horribly damaged and arthritic due to unresolved tarsal coalition so I decided to try them while working out in my VR fitness app Supernatural... GAMECHANGER!!! If I was jumping around before, now I am leaping! I then bought myself several pairs of Amp in team colours for comp days. Makes being on your feet all day during a dance competition pretty much effortless and no next day limping around in pain cause I over did it. Thanks for the amazing socks!!!
This is my 3rd Apolla order! The Joule especially is a life saver and has really helped with my plantar fasciitis.
I absolutely love my joule shocks! Returning to ballet after many years, and now with an old ankle injury and plantar fascitis, these give me the perfect amount of extra support and light compression while dancing without being restrictive, and they fit easily into my ballet shoes. Highly recommend, wish I found these sooner!!
These are a life saver! I injured my food in 2020 doing aerial yoga. I have a chronic plantar plate injury and thought I would have to give up yoga. I saw these on Shark Tank and bought some. I was thrilled that they relieved my pain and allowed me to continue my yoga practice. I forgot them once and could hardly work through the yoga poses. Now I keep a pair in my car just in case.
Was skeptical at first since they done seem like much but after wearing them through 2 hours of classes, I didn’t have pain in my arches like usual. Was so impressed I even used them through the airport and on the plane and didn’t have near the swelling as I usually do.
Joule Shocks are super supportive over ballet flats and pointe shoes. They keep my feet and ankles warm and aligned during class, and as a bonus, can help reduce heel slippage in pointe shoes. They are a great addition to my ballet bag.
My daughter is a dancer and wears these every day. Her ankles feel much better and stronger.
They are great! However, they should be slightly taller.. they slip over the ankle bone easily but this would be resolved if they were taller!
Our 13yo started pointe this year and rates these as a 4.5. They’re great, but sometimes she wishes they vibed more. I have no idea what that means! Ha!
I've worn these with my ballet slippers and by themselves for modern dance. I even wear them with sneakers from time to time. My arches have never felt better thanks to the superb quality. I love the detailing of them and while I thought they were pricey at first, the performance of them said it was money well spent. You need to take care of your feet. Please take my word as a dancer and cop yourself a pair of the Joule. You won't look at the other compression socks the same.
I ordered compression socks off of Amazon because they were cheaper. They were so tight it hurt to walk. The Apolla sock fit my swollen feet so much better and I now have three pair. I love the way they fit. You get what you pay for.
i’ve really enjoyed wearing these to ballet so far!! they support my ankles well. they also are comfy and not too tight or too big. cant wait to continue to wear these!!
I had these for a few years when I lost my first pair. These are great for my dance team and when I'm just around the house and my arches feel bleh. I much prefer these to the Mid-calf compression socks
My 9 year old ballet dancer is wearing her Joules under her tights and ballet shoes for extra support on her Marley floor at home. She likes them and keeps them on after class to relieve any ankle pain. She has a size small and with care, my hope is they will last her many years. She wears a street shoe size 3 and ballet shoe 4.5 B. She has no trouble putting them on herself.
I ordered the Joule for myself as I have a torn tendon in my ankle that doesn’t require surgery. I’m not a dancer, but I do dance! I’ve been in the dance and competitive dance world with my daughters for over 20 years! I practice yoga, do Zumba and cardio dance and I work out at home as well as take long walks with my dog. As soon as I put in the Joule, my ankle felt supported. It was tight enough without cutting off circulation or range of motion. I also have a bad knee and the joule with my knee brace keeps me aligned. I’ve tried other compression socks but they made my ankle pain worse. I’m hooked! I now wear these socks everyday with my flip flops, as I live in Florida! I ordered the joule without traction.
My daughter loves her Joule Shocks. They fit beautifully inside her ballet, character, tap, jazz and turning shoes. I was confused by the website and ordered 2, when in actuality I ended up with 4, (it wasn’t clear that they came in sets).
I've been dancing for over 30 years and the Joule Shock is the best thing I've ever done for my hardworking feet and ankles. The size is true, the support is perfect (especially for the arthritis pain in my ankles). I only wish these existed 30 years ago! I highly recommend the Joule Shock. Thanks, Appola!
I wore these when I had an ankle injury, they really gave me that extra support and compression to help me get through class and rehearsal! Plus they make your feet look nice as well ;) I will definitely be wearing Apolla all the time now!
I'm not a dancer, but I've been practicing Taekwondo for nearly a decade, and at forty, I'm no spring chicken anymore (something I feel especially when trying to perform high jumping spin kicks for the teenagers). My ankles have always been a little stiff and prone to rolling over, but particularly in the last year, I've been having more and more difficulty that has shaded into injury a few times. Thankfully, nothing that hasn't laid me up for more than a week or two, but it's definitely concerning. But what can I do in a sport that doesn't allow shoes fitted with orthotics? I decided to give Apolla a try, especially as they had a sock - the Joule - that leaves the balls of the feet and the heels open, perfect for the Taekwondo mats. While any support they might give is too subtle for me to feel directly, the bands around my arches make me far more aware of how I balance over my feet now. When I start feeling them flattening and rolling my knees in, I correct my balance so I'm more centered over my feet. This has carried over into even my running now, so that I'm making sure my stance isn't so knock-kneed and that I have good form every time my feet hit the pavement. For that alone, I'm quite grateful for the awareness Joule has contributed. They have been super comfortable to wear and I don't mind going through multiple classes with them on. While they're not designed to provide super support in the case of a bad landing or kick, I think at least that the extra awareness they give me of my body's position will help prevent some bad landings and kicks from even happening, which is even better.
