Guiding Dancers to Dream Careers | The guiDANCE Experience

Hello Readers … Stephanie here from The guiDANCE Experience! I am so proud to be the Artistic Director of this incredible dance competition and convention that Kelly Peterson has created. Today I would love to share a quick tip on how to mentor dancers that are interested in pursuing a career in dance. I absolutely do not have all the answers or a magic wand that makes it happen, but I can share my experience in hopes that we can help young dancers find their way.

Many of us have taken our passion and love of dance from childhood into our careers whether they be as Professional Dancers, Teachers, Choreographers, Physical Therapists, or even into dance competitions like me. In our line of work, we have the privilege of mentoring young dancers and are helping to guide them into falling in love with the same industry that we have chosen. It is a crucial time now, especially for our high school seniors, as they choose colleges and universities and try to answer that overarching question: “what do I want to do for the rest of my life?” They love to dance, and they just aren’t sure what their options are.

Through my experience in the industry, I think it is so important for young dancers to be curious. There are an enormous number of jobs out there that encompass our industry outside of Broadway and commercial work in LA. When I was growing up and navigating my own dream to be a dancer, those were the only two options I was aware of. It is our job to open their eyes to all of the options they truly do have, and that they can have an extremely successful career even if they never set foot on a Broadway stage.

First of all, we need to help them identify their idea of success; what that looks like and how to get there. Their definition of success will and should look different than the dancer standing next to them. We are all unique with different skills and talents and have our own paths to follow. Encourage them to do their research and follow things they are strong at and passionate about. Today there are endless opportunities in our industry: theme parks, cruise ships, behind the scenes positions, sound, lightning, costume design, television, music tour choreographers, tour managers, production managers, etc. What style of dance do they love the most – is contemporary, ballet or modern? Maybe they look into professional company work. Do they like to travel – if yes, then maybe a national tour or a cruise ship are for them. If no, then maybe they could find a local theater and be the wardrobe supervisor or head sound technician there.

And always remember - there is a job out there for every dancer, every style, every size, every color … stay inspired and go find it!
