Staying Healthy During the Holidays
The holiday season is here, and with all the joy and celebration often comes added stress, sickness, and overwhelm. From family gatherings to work deadlines and gift shopping, the pressure can take a toll on our health. For some, the holidays mean more travel, long flights, and crowded spaces—factors that can make staying healthy more challenging. As the temperatures drop, there are simple actions we can take to protect our health this winter season. Whether you're preparing for a big performance, a ski trip, or just a cozy staycation, here are my top tips to keep you feeling your best during the holidays.
- Rest and Recover
While the winter months may tempt us to curl up on the couch, it's crucial to keep moving for both physical and mental health. With that being said, we still need to listen to our bodies. Recovery is just as important as activity. Instead of pushing yourself too hard, try incorporating stretching into your routine. Treat yourself to a sauna or hot tub session to help relax and ease tension. Giving your body time to recover ensures you're ready to take on the busy days without burning out.
- Don't Skip Meals
It’s easy to fall into the trap of skipping meals, in an attempt to balance out all the holiday treats. However, this approach can backfire. Maintaining regular, balanced meals is essential for supporting your immune system. In between holiday treats, fuel your body with nutrient-dense foods that keep you feeling strong. Seasonal fruits and vegetables, like citrus fruits, leafy greens, and root vegetables, are packed with vitamins and minerals that are especially beneficial in colder months. Foods rich in vitamin C, zinc, and probiotics can help strengthen your body’s immunity and promote gut health.
- Stay Hydrated—Inside and Out
When the temperature drops, we tend to forget how important hydration is. We often think of hydration in terms of water, but your body needs moisture from a variety of sources—inside and outside. In addition to drinking water, consider incorporating warming beverages like herbal teas or bone broth to help stay hydrated. Your skin needs extra hydration in the winter too. Winter air can leave it dry and irritated. To avoid excess dryness, try reducing the temperature of your shower and shorten the duration. Moisturize your skin regularly to lock in hydration.
- Keep Cozy Layers Handy
The cold can strike at any time, so it’s a good idea to have layers on hand. Our feet are particularly vulnerable, so make sure you have a warm pair of socks ready to go wherever you are. My favorite pair to have available are Apolla Performance Crew socks. Not only do they keep your toes toasty warm, but they also offer compression, arch support, and ankle stability, making them a great choice for staying comfortable. Whether you're heading outdoors or reading by the fireplace, these are my go-to for winter warmth.
- Get Outside, Breathe Fresh Air
Getting out for some sunlight and fresh air each day can help fight off the winter blues. Even a short walk outside can do wonders for your health. Exposure to natural light helps regulate our circadian rhythm and can boost our mood. Walking also provides light exercise, which improves circulation, supports digestion, and immunity. Enhance the benefits of your walk by inviting a friend or family member to join you outdoors and soak up some vitamin D together.
- Prioritize You
Holiday stress can easily become overwhelming, so prioritizing yourself is a must. Whether it’s 5 minutes of quiet time, a relaxing bath, or a hobby to help you unwind, taking time to yourself is necessary. Practices like meditation or journaling can help you stay grounded through the hustle and bustle. If you begin to feel overwhelmed, pause for a moment and take a break. Reducing stress is essential to keeping your immune system strong and maintaining your overall well-being.
During the holiday season, we don’t just have to survive—we can thrive. With a few adjustments, we can make the most of this holiday season and truly feel our best for all the festivities!
